Utila – The Jade Seahorse and Roatan Arrival

Last night, we were both sitting around after dinner talking about how good we were going to sleep after the all-night sail to Utila. Randall looked up and said, “We’re dragging!” We had been sitting there semi-comatose but those two words got us both in gear as the boat drifted precariously close to the neighboring boat. We both jumped up to pull the anchor up and spent the next 30 minutes resetting the anchor and backing down on it to get it to dig in. We finally got settled back in and Randall said, “Well we will probably be doing that again at two a.m.” We woke up at 6 a.m. so happy that the anchor alarm hadn’t gone off in the night.

I love the blue staircase! This place is for sale, too.

We went to shore for a late breakfast. However, we took a few minutes to drop by The Jade Seahorse. We had eaten at an artsy restaurant on Wednesday and they told us to be sure to check out The Jade Seahorse. I don’t know anything about the artist who worked on these two buildings but they are so funky and unique. The Jade Seahorse is an art garden, restaurant and cabin rental business. The garden has coral walls covered in mosaics made from shell, glass tiles and whatever else struck the artist’s fancy. There was a treehouse bar that Lily and I loved and a little coral tunnel which Randall really liked. The cabins were also decked out in fanciful trim and great paint colors. I would love to see the inside of the cabins! I am sure there is a surprise in every room and even on the ceilings.

Utila cabin for rent. I loved the three shades of blue paint, the trim, the porch. OK everything.

Many a romantic evening in Utila starts with the words "Let's have a drink under the Red Pagoda."

We didn’t eat at Jade Seahorse since it was only open for dinner. However, we had some really great egg sandwiches on freshly-baked sweet rolls at the bakery. I asked the baker if I could take her picture. She was waved me off a little embarrassed at first but then smiled for this picture.

More sweet rolls on the way.

We left at noon for the afternoon sail to Roatan. We got here and saw two of our buddy boats in the harbor. Tom motored over to help us get situated on the mooring ball and find out if we had tucked in at Utila. As we were talking, a Honduran park service boat pulled up. We initially thought we might be getting in trouble for still having a fishing line in the water. Instead, he called out “Foxtrot, your friends are looking for you. We have been notified to be on the look out for Foxtrot. Is everything OK?” And Tom added, “Yes, we are the ones looking for Foxtrot!” To which we added, “We are finally here!”
